BEACON
HOUSE
 |
A
Group Home Program for adolescent girls in out
of home care |
WHAT
ARE OUR OBJECTIVES?
Our first
objective is to return our residents to their homes;
unfortunately, more than three quarters of the time,
our residents cannot return home. Thus, we become
their temporary family and prepare them for Independent
Living.
BEACON HOUSE
PROVIDES
•
A warm, safe, secure, structured environment
• Counseling
• Individual, group and family therapy
• Academic support
• Life Skills Training
• Vocational training
• Career guidance
• Opportunities to develop ethics &
responsibility
• Encouragement to be self sufficient
and develop a personal “code of honor”
Beacon House
provides for eight girls. All attend public school
with supplementary tutoring provided by Beacon House
in conjunction with the local school system.
Residents
earn privileges depending on age and behavior. Many
girls participate in school activities and clubs.
Each resident is assigned a weekly chore and receives
a small allowance.
WHERE ARE
PAST RESIDENTS NOW?
Former residents
include legal assistants, nurses, waitresses, bank
tellers, retail sales people, bank branch managers,
cooks, food managers, child-care providers, auto
mechanics, ambulance attendants, cashiers and real
estate agents. During the past twenty five years,
hundreds of teens have been served by Beacon House,
and have entered virtually every career.
Many of our
residents have attended college, including BriarWood,
Albertus Magnus, Yale, UConn, Boston U., SCSU, and
Teikyo Post. Not all former residents have pursued
this path, but most are doing well, and are happy,
productive citizens of our community.
Beacon House
has been successful in impacting the lives of many
young women. However, it is not possible without
the assistance of our many volunteers and contributors.
It is this collective effort between Beacon House
Staff, Board of Managers, volunteers and contributors
which make the saying “It takes a whole village
to raise a child” certainly true with the
children and youth that Beacon House must provide
for.
